For this technique to work, the toner must be able to refill on top of the 15g of residual toner without causing print defects. We've consciously checked this issue for our own toner. If you've had poor results in the past - blotches and background scales - this is almost certainly the explanation.

And it makes sense. Most aftermarket toners are actually produced to be used by professional "remanufacturers" who have the equipment and will to empty out the residual toner - and, in fact, blast out the inside of the cartridge with compressed air - before refilling. So it's likely no one's ever tested them as part of a "refill on top" technique (er, except us, that is).
